The Maroela tree is protected under South African law, which ensures environmentally-friendly treatment and sustainability. Over 60, 000 people are supported through the harvesting of the Maroela fruit, primarily in the extreme northeastern reaches of South Africa. Long believed to have been the nutritional sustenance of the people living in South Africa, the mystical Maroela tree is indigenous to Southern Africa, and yields a soft fleshy fruit, pale yellow in color when ripe and packed around a large, very hard kernel. Harvested from the ground, and naturally high in Vitamin C and other nutrients, the maroela fruit pulp forms the basis of smooth, indulgent Amarula Cream..Called the "Elephant Tree, " the maroela fruit harvest extends from January through to March. The Maroela tree is protected under South African law, which ensures environmentally-friendly treatment and sustainability. Annually during the harvesting season the ripe maroela fruit is first gathered by hand from the veld by the local community and brought to the factory, hand - sorted and the flesh removed from the skin. In the de-stoning tank, rotating blades removes the flesh from the hard kernels. The resulting fruit pulp and hard kernels are then separated and the pulp is pumped into stainless steel cooling tanks to prevent fermentation. The kernels is dried in the sun and ground into a fine powder (50 micron) from which the facial skin care powder is formulated.
