The combination of instrumental techniques with the more traditional methods of analysis has enabled Alfred H Knight to provide its clients with accurate results and a more rapid efficient service, essential in view of the high intrinsic value of most of the commodities being traded. Due to the international reputation of our UKAS accredited laboratory we are one of the most highly regarded arbitration laboratories in the world. Our analytical facility in the UK is staffed by some seventy qualified chemists and technicians with many years experience in the analysis of metallurgical commodities. The wet chemical laboratories are engaged chiefly in the analysis of base metal concentrates. Classical gravimetric and volumetric methods are utilised for the major constituents with minor and trace elements determined generally by Inductively Coupled Plasma Emission and Atomic Absorption Spectrometry. In certain instances other instrumental methods, incorporating Ion Selective Electrode Measurement and Spectrophotometry, are used. Our Precious Metal Fire Assay and Chemical Laboratory is routinely analysing silver, gold and the platinum group metals in ores, concentrates, catalysts, blister copper, dore, residues and scrap materials. Traditional fire assay techniques are incorporated together with other collection procedures with final determination by Inductively Coupled Plasma Emission Spectrometry, gravimetric or spectrophotometric techniques. The X-ray fluorescence technique is routinely employed in the analysis of industrial minerals, ferro alloys, tungsten, tantalum and niobium bearing materials for major and minor constituents. Our laboratory is equipped with the latest, fully automated spectrometers to provide fast and accurate results for our clients. Our specialist non-routine laboratory is capable of analysing complex metallurgical products, trace chemical analysis, exotic metals, problem solving and complete analytical breakdown analysis. Optical Emission Spectrometry is available for the rapid and accurate analysis of high purity metals and alloys. Our technical personnel are always available to discuss and exchange analytical methodology and regularly attend and present papers at analytical conferences and seminars.
