Funnel cake is a fried little cake with powdered sugar; which is a Pennsylvania Dutch dessert created by frying cake batter in hot oil. The batter is dispensed through a funnel cake pitcher spout or a regular funnel. To form the funnel cake you pour the batter into the frying oil in a complete circle around ring or pan and zigzag left and right motions over the hot oil at 400 degrees. Then turn funnel cake when golden in about 35 seconds. Drain and coat with powdered sugar, sugar glaze, honey chocolate syrup, maple syrup or a variety of fruit toppings.The traditional funnel cake began as a regional dish prepared by the Pennsylvania Dutch and Amish communities living primarily in Pennsylvania. Funnel cakes were most often prepared for special occasions, such as carnival, fair, festivals.
