We Breath ITInformation technology (IT) is the applicationof computers to store, retrieve, transmit andmanipulate data,[1] often in the context of a business orother enterprise.[2] IT is considered a subsetof information and communications technology (ICT). In2012, Zuppo proposed an ICT hierarchy where each hierarchy level"contain some degree of commonality in that they are related totechnologies that facilitate the transfer of information andvarious types of electronically mediatedcommunications."[3] Business/IT was one level of the ICThierarchy.The term is commonly used as a synonym for computers andcomputer networks, but it also encompassesother information distribution technologies such astelevision and telephones. Several industries areassociated with information technology, including computerhardware, software, electronics,semiconductors, internet, telecomequipment, engineering, healthcare, e-commerce andcomputer services.[4][a]Humans have been storing, retrieving, manipulating andcommunicating information sincethe Sumerians in Mesopotamia developed writing inabout 3000 BC,[6] but the term informationtechnology in its modern sense first appeared in a 1958article published in the Harvard Business Review;authorsHarold J. Leavitt and Thomas L. Whisler commented that"the new technology does not yet have a single established name. Weshall call it information technology (IT)." Their definitionconsists of three categories: techniques for processing, theapplication of statistical and mathematical methods todecision-making, and the simulation of higher-order thinkingthrough computer programs.[7]Based on the storage and processing technologies employed, it ispossible to distinguish four distinct phases of IT development:pre-mechanical (3000 BC 1450 AD), mechanical(14501840), electromechanical (18401940) electronic(1940present),[6] and moreover, IT as a service. Thisarticle focuses on the most recent period (electronic), which beganin about 1940.
