  • Company Introduction

Started by two dear friends, Harold Graham and Henry Brown in 1946,with very little between them except foresight and friendship. Withthe severe shortage of paper following the War, Henry and Haroldcleverly procured a large supply of surplus metallic paper, aneight-colour surface printer and a new embossing machine, withwhich the two men began a wallpaper revolution. The public, desperate for things to help brighten up their homes following thehard years of war, snapped it up so fast Graham & Brown couldbarely meet demand. The company grew quickly and prospered untilthe energy crisis of the Korean War in the early 1950s and thetragic early death of Harold Graham at 39. Henry Brown, determinedto keep their dream alive and the business growing, appointedHarolds brother Herbert as Director and the business moved on.At the heart of Graham & Brown lies a solid respect for itsemployees, customers and environment, which owes much to HenryBrowns personal approach to business. With little fuss or fanfare,he ensured his workers were well looked after in times of troubleor illness, and as a result generations of the same families becamepart of the Graham & Brown family too.Even today, you dont have to have a Graham or a Brown in your nameto be part of this family, says David Brown, Joint Chairman. With the 1960s came the involvement of Henry and Harolds sons DavidBrown and Roger Graham, and a modern management approach. WithHenry still at the helm they expanded facilities with the additionof further factories, and the purchase of potential rivalcompanies. The 1970s saw Graham & Brown producing millions ofrolls of wallpaper a year, establishing the company as one of thelargest independent wallpaper manufacturers in Britain and agrowing force in Europe. New ideas in wallpaper were introducedlike washable vinyl wallcoverings.Through continued innovation and creative thought, Graham &Brown launched its now famous Superfresco brand, which was then, asnow, easy to hang (and take down), could be painted or washed, andwas the first range the company advertised on TV. Its iconic whatgoes up must come down… TV advert was so memorable that it was usedagain in the late 1990s.During this time, Graham & Brown were producing wallpaper asquickly as it was flying off the shelves. By 1984 the company hadmore than quadrupled its market share and tripled turnover, andSuperfresco went on to become the best selling wallpaper brand inthe world, available in over 50 countries. With a third generationof Graham & Brown family members now on board, the companysambitions took a step further in the late 1980s with continuedinvestment in machinery to allow them to make new pre-pastedproducts and a fresh TV campaign. The 1990s brought further innovations and by 1992 Graham &Brown produced the worlds first batchless wallcoverings and by theturn of the century the company were promoting another innovation, paste the wall technology to a contemporary audience via a new TVcampaign. New associations were forged with designer LaurenceLlewelyn-Bowen who was quickly followed by Linda Barker ,hemingwaydesign , Jans des Bouvrie, Marcel Wanders and mostrecently Kelly Hoppen.International expansion that had begun with the United States hasgrown in the last decade to see divisions established in France,Holland, Russia, Canada, and China, with the latest addition to thefold being Graham & Brown, Germany. Innovation of thought andaction has seen the company drive the industry from the doldrumsinto growth.
