Based in Sori onthe shores of Lake Victoria in Migori county, Oba Kunta AfricanExports Ltd, a Kenya-based private company, is an agro-industrialentity with activities ranging from growing sisal, technicalservices to contract farmers, processing sisal leaves into fibreand value addition, and marketing. Our market is big and the demandis increasing day by day. Currently we export an average of 30metric tons per month. Oba Kuntaâs business is designed as ahigh-profit venture that extends its core activities in ways thatcreate opportunities for the rural poor. Our focus; therefore,is not only to succeed in terms of our commercial viability butalso on our potential rural development impact. The idea is to havea positive impact on the rural poor: delivering increasedemployment at reduced costs and empowering humanpotential                        .Sisal is a cropthat has traditionally been produced on large plantations, whichhave been quite pleased to produce sisal ï¬bre exclusively from theland utilised. Of late it has been realized that there is a greatneed to empower small scale farmers in order to increase annualtonnage. The success factors of small holder inclusion are alreadyevident in Tanzania. In Brazil, the worldâs largest producer,production is almost exclusively done by small scale farmers. Thereare many advantages of empowering small scale besides having aincreased annual output. Intercropping beside maize and beans, forinstance, prevents soil erosion.
