Wim Kools-Focusing the Medical Profession on PeopleWim Kools has had a wide and varied medical career. Wim&＃39;s unique blend of experiences have led him to strive for two consistent themes: love and curiosity for the Medical Profession and a continuous focus on what is most important-the Patients. After being a GP in the Netherlands, Wim trained to be a surgeon in Amsterdam as well as in Germany. His move to Germany was inspired by the fact that the German licensing standards required extensive and cataloged hands-on Operating Theater experience. During his training he took two spells of voluntary leave to work as a surgeon in refugee camps, first in Cambodia (1979) and then in Somalia (1982) . Under these extreme circumstances he not only proved himself to be a truly skilled all-round surgeon but he also came into contact with the meaning and consequences of medical and logistics organization at the most fundamental level. After that Wim worked for 5 years in Brunei, set up a successful clinic in Germany and worked as a surgeon in Nigeria and the Cayman Islands. Presently he is the coordinator of surgical education at the University Medical Centre (UMC) in Utrecht, the Netherlands where he has participated in re-developing the complete curriculum, teaches young medical students and takes care or medical practitioners who have a refugee status in the Netherlands. In his work, Wim strives to create effective medical teams of motivated professionals who are driven by passion. His passion for the wonder of the human body is inspiring to his students and colleagues alike, and brings back the understanding that medicine is about healing and about people. His crusade against unnecessary bureaucracy and inappropriate organizational controls may sometimes irritate the few, but his experience in this area always leads to a fitting, balanced approach. Wim has a talent for making medical practitioners, teams and organizations that have a desire to care more for their patients successful. Wim loves to travel and to get involved with the people he works with.
