ZigBee based AMR solution is suited for customers located in densely packed areas like residential areas or industrial clusters. ZigBee communication protocol uses license free band. Hence there is no need for purchasing a frequency license. This reduces the cost of the system. The nodes or end points used in the network consume extremely low power and go into sleep mode when not in use. As ZigBee uses mesh & Cluster-Tree networking topology it adds reliability in the transmission. By using ZigBee communication protocol the utility doesn’t have to pay monthly subscription to the telecom operator. Thus, reducing overall maintenance and operating cost. In ZigBee based AMR solution, electricity meter consists of Reduced Function Device (RFD) or Full Function Device(FFD) in the mesh network. A FFD can route data from source to destination if direct link is not available. The meter reading is transmitted using ZigBee network to data concentrator. This data concentrator is standard GSM/SMS/GPRS modem that transmits data at regular intervals. At the utility end the base station uses GSM/SMS/GPRS infrastructure to retrieve the meter readings. The billing software then processes retrieved meter reading.
