Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company Limited officially commenced operations on the 1st of November 1993 as a state-run corporate enterprise for the processing and exportation of fisheries products. The prime objective of the organization is the production and marketing of niche-branded, internationally accredited and 100% Maldivian-origin manufactured products to European and Asian destinations.When Mifco decided to re-enter the fresh fish market in 1997, they began looking for a virgin island site on which to build and develop from scratch a dedicated landing and processing unit.Kandu Oiy Giri was chosen as the site due to its close proximity to the International Airport and to the capital, Male'.The operation for Kandu Oiy Giri Fish Village thus started in 26th February 1999.KFV is a fresh fish processing site located 6 kilometers from the International Airport. KFV was opened to break into the fresh fish market of Japan and Europe. Being the first local Fresh Fish factory, KFV has owned the prestige of mainly the best quality tuna providers.A maximum of 10MT /day of vacuum-packed loins can be produced.Export products include H&G, GG, loins and chunks of fresh tuna; reef fish fillets and whole round; frozen skipjack. KFV also produces curry cuts, minced meat, tuna cuts, tuna belly and breaded tuna exclusively for the local market.Traditionally the Maldivian fishery industry has been dominated by skipjack processed mainly for canning and dry processing. Therefore, KFV represents Mifco's determination to be in the forefront of diversifying the fishery of the country.Ever since operation at KFV started in 1999; KFV is one of the largest exporters of chilled products to European market. The company has further expanded in 2003 with the addition of a new factory exclusively for the Japanese sashimi quality market.Raw materials for the products are all obtained locally by local fishing boats contracted by the company.All fish are processed as chilled and are flown to European/Asian markets from the international airport at Male'.KFV's laboratories are independently accredited and the plant carries its own EU approval number. The site has HACCP approval, EFSIS (European Food Safety Inspection Service) & CLAS (Campden Laboratory Accreditation Scheme) accreditation.In the near future Mifco looks to diversifying its activities by venturing in to Aquaculture and Mariculture activities and thus processing and marketing greater volumes towards value added products.
